Chapter 14

A THUD WAKES ME UP.

It’s still dark, but there’s some illumination coming from the lights that are outside the house so the guards are able to see what’s going on.

I listen carefully, my pulse speeding up.

Someone’s in the hallway.

Maybe it’s just one of the guards, or maybe it’s someone else. I doubt someone has broken in.

If there was an attack, I would be hearing way more than just an occasional thud and footsteps.

I strain my ears some more.

Since no gunshots can be heard, I think I’m safe.

The click of the door makes me tense. The door opens and closes.

I sit up.

Dante stumbles toward me.

“Shit. Did I wake you?” he mumbles.

“What are you doing?” I ask.

“I don’t know.” He climbs on the bed and settles next to me. “I don’t know why I’m here.”

The two top buttons of his white dress shirt are open, and his sleeves are rolled up. He smells like a mix of alcohol and the scent that’s unique to him.

Even in the dark, I can see the turmoil in his eyes.

“What’s wrong?” I ask.

“Everything.”

I look at him, wondering what he means. “I thought you were happy. Did something bad happen when you—”

“It’s my uncle. Again.” He sighs.

“What’s up with your uncle? What is he doing now?”

“He found an ally. Someone powerful and crazy enough to dare to go against me. Before, all my uncle had were empty threats. He’d pull off some shit, like stealing my drug or weapon shipments, or he’d tip off the cops when he found out some things, or even had one of his construction companies bid for the same job as me just to spite me. But now, it looks like there’s going to be a war. He’s becoming a serious threat. A threat I’ll have to eliminate.”

“Is that a problem?” I lick my dry lips. “I mean, do you not want to kill him?”

He doesn’t answer, just stares at the ceiling.

“How many people have you killed so far?” I don’t know why I ask, but I guess I’m curious.

“Too many to count.” His head turns to me. “Why?”

“I thought you’d keep count.”

“Do you think killing is fun? That I should keep score? As if it were a sport?”

“No, I don’t. But why do you do it then?”

“Because I have to. It’s part of the job. It’s necessary. I don’t enjoy it.”

I lift my eyebrows. That’s definitely not something I’ve heard about him. I heard the opposite, actually.

“Can’t you come to an agreement with your uncle?” I ask. “If you don’t want to go to war with him, then find common ground.”

“I can’t.”

“Why not? Have you tried talking to him about it? It might seem impossible right now, but maybe it’s not. Maybe he’ll be willing to listen to you. Does he want your territory or something?”

“Oh, he wants everything. He wants everything that’s mine.” His eyes bore into mine.

“Doesn’t he have his own territory? Wouldn’t controlling a very large area be difficult? Maybe he’s not thinking about—”

“He has his territory, but it’s not about that.
